It is with heavy hearts and deep love that we announce the passing of our cherished father and friend, Howard Haney Smoot, who left us peacefully on Thursday, May 29, 2025, at the age of 83. He was a retired Operator A at Panhandle Eastern in Centralia, Missouri.

A devoted dad, loyal friend, and man of steady hands and steady heart, Howard Smoot lived a life rooted in hard work, simple joys, and unwavering devotion to the people he loved. He was a proud and passionate St. Louis Cardinals fan—never missing a game if he could help it—and found a quiet happiness in freshly cut grass and the hum of a lawn mower on a warm afternoon. When not mowing or watching the Cardinals play, he loved to watch Westerns.

Born at his family's farm on December 26, 1941, to Leo Sr and Dorothy Smoot of Centralia, Missouri, Howard spent his life building a home filled with loyalty, honesty, hard work, dedication and love. He taught us by example—to show up, to work hard, and to always find time for what brings you joy. Whether he was tuning into the ballgame, perfecting the lines in the yard, or lending a hand to a neighbor, he did it all with heart.

He is survived by daughter, Crystal Smoot of Centralia, son Todd Smoot (Cynthia Smoot), three grandchildren, Trevor Smoot of Harrisburg, Taylor Smoot of Harrisburg and Jacob Meador of Mexico. He is also survived by his brother Leo Smoot Jr. of Bartlett, Illinois.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 30 years, Jolene Meeks Smoot, 2 sons, Leslie Smoot and Cameron Smoot, brother Harold (Pete) Smoot and sister Jane Fritz-Starkey as well as his parents, Leo Sr and Dorothy Smoot.

A private family service will be held at a later date
