Obituary

Richard Joseph Rexroat, 76, passed away peacefully on October 29, 2026, while in hospice care at Baptist Homes of Ashland.

Rich was born on September 10, 1950, at Audrain Community Hospital in Mexico, Missouri, the youngest child of seven children. He was raised in Centralia, Missouri, where his lifelong love of books, learning, and libraries began to take shape. At just 15 years old, Rich began working at the Centralia Public Library in March 1966. What started as a teenage job would grow into a lifelong passion and a distinguished career in academic librarianship.

After graduating from Centralia High School in May 1968, Rich continued his education at the University of Missouri. In September 1972, he joined the United States Navy, serving his country until September 27, 1976. During his service, he was stationed in Norfolk, Virginia, at the NATO Headquarters of the Supreme Allied Command Atlantic, where he served as a Yeoman. He was honorably discharged after completing four years of military service.

Following his time in the Navy, Rich returned to Columbia and continued his education at the University of Missouri. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in August 1977, with a double major in Library Science and History, and went on to pursue graduate studies in Library and Information Science.

Rich devoted more than 45 years of his professional life to the University of Missouri library system. He began at Ellis Library as a student assistant and worked his way through the ranks, ultimately becoming head librarian and manager of Technical Services at the Health Sciences Library. His dedication, knowledge, and commitment to the university made librarianship much more than a career; it was a calling that remained an important part of his life for decades.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, James Edward Rexroat and Gladys Marie (Brock) Rexroat, and all six of his siblings: sisters Annetta Timmermans, Margaret Decker, and Marie Greene; and brothers James Edward Jr., John Brock, and Charles Eugene Rexroat.

Rich lived a fulfilling life surrounded by the things he loved most. He was an avid reader, particularly enjoying spy novels, and a loyal Kansas City Chiefs fan. He also treasured keeping in touch with and visiting his many nieces and nephews, maintaining family connections throughout the years. His family and friendships were an important part of his life.

Rich will be remembered as a beloved son, uncle, brother, friend, and colleague. He leaves behind a legacy of dedication to his profession, a lifelong love of learning, and lasting relationships with the many people whose lives he touched. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew and loved him.
