Travis
Mar 22, 1940 — May 6, 2026
Melissa, TX
Thomas “Coach Tom” Travis, 86, of Melissa, Texas, passed away on May 6, 2026. He was born on March 22, 1940, in Centralia, Missouri, to Tommy and Margaret Travis.
Tom married the love of his life, Marilyn June McKenzie, on December 28, 1963. Together they built a life centered on family, friendships, and the many communities they served throughout Tom’s coaching career.
Tom devoted his life to education and athletics, beginning his teaching and coaching career in Missouri at Lafayette and Marceline schools. He later became best known as the longtime head football coach of the Hickman High School Kewpies in Columbia, Missouri, where he served from 1972 to 1992. During his tenure, Coach Travis led the Kewpies to the 1974 State Championship and built a program defined not only by success on the field, but by character, discipline, and lifelong relationships.
In 1995, Tom was inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in recognition of his outstanding contributions to athletics and the countless young lives he influenced throughout his career. Though he appreciated the honors and accomplishments, his teams always meant the world to him. He cared deeply for his players and took immense pride in watching them grow both on and off the field.
Following his years in Missouri, Tom continued coaching in Texas before retiring. In retirement, he especially enjoyed spending time on the golf course and sharing stories and laughter with friends and family.
Tom was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Marilyn June Travis; his parents, Tommy and Margaret Travis; and his brother, Jerry Travis.
He is survived by his daughter, Stacey Laine; extended family members; and the many players, students, fellow coaches, and friends whose lives were touched by his mentorship, kindness, and unwavering support.
A Celebration of Life will be held on June 6, 2026, in Centralia, Missouri, with visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. and services at 11:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Rachael’s Rescues, P.O. Box 534, Anna, TX 75409.
Coach Travis leaves behind a lasting legacy of leadership, compassion, and dedication that will continue to inspire all who knew him.
